In 2011, Diplo’s Mad Decent decided to implement a new way of releasing music that created a launchpad for artists breaking the norm: “Jeffree”. This includes the start of many careers including Baauer, DJ Snake and Yellow Claw. The result of this digital-age idea, resulted in a new track being dropped every two weeks for free (limited time of course). What is a Jeffree? That’s the question a lot of people wondered and Mad Decent tackled in one package: What Is A Jeffree?
Showcasing an array of sounds from dancehall riddims to trap to even a hint of moombah, the twelve-track pacakge, What Is A Jeffree?, proudly flaunts exactly what Mad Decent had intentions of beginning, “featuring a new crop of artists who we believe are spearheading new genres, true to the Jeffree’s style…Get your ears ready for the future sounds of tomorrow.” Blessing the compilation are some pretty impressive names including Ape Drums, BIG MAKK, JSTJR, and Happy Colors, all of whom embody a futuristically unique sound.
