Almost a year after the inception of his “Snoop Lion” character, Snoop Doggy Dog aka The Dogfather aka Snoooooooop! has decided to make a triumphant return to west coast g-funk under a new alias: Snoopzilla. Teaming up with the master of modern funk, Dam-Funk of the infamous Stones Throw Records, Snoop explains in an interview with Rolling Stone that this project (called 7 Days Of Funk) is a return to his musical roots:
“We’re the babies of the Mothership,” Snoopzilla said in a statement. “I’ve had funk influences in my music my whole career. Dam-Funk is cold. He’s keeping the funk alive and I knew I had to get down with him.
This glorious return to 70’s-style psychedelic funk is a welcome change after “Snoop Lion’s” Reincarnated received mixed reviews. Personally, as an LA kid who grew up in the 90’s listening to The Chronic (2001 hasn’t left my CD player EVER), this falls just short of telling me Dr. Dre is finally going to drop that album-which-shall-not-be-named. ****, maybe he’ll make an appearence on the first 7 Days Of Funk album.
