VOGUE recently caught up with Abel Tesfaye aka the Weeknd, and recorded the experience in a monstrous article that reveals a bit about what this R&B turned Pop Music phenomena may be up to — starting with where he has been hanging. The answer is in a cavelike studio known by the name Conway Recording Studios, where down the hall Justin Timberlake is fixing himself a cup of tea. Abel sits in his lair plotting the next move in his ultimate takeover.
The biggest takeaway from the article is the fact that The Weeknd is back in the studio with his House Of Balloons team, his debut project that gave him his start and first notoriety. The move is a suggestion that The Weeknd may be moving more towards his darker OG RnB style., which he has recently traded in for more of a pop-ish sound.
‘He credits Jean-Michel Basquiat and LA rapper Murs’ for his somewhat whacky look, only one of the reasons this incredible artist that is the Weeknd has gained such intense popularity recently. Wild is one adjective to describe him, and original is another. He is something, and there is something brewing in his brilliantly wild and exceptionally creative mind. Tesfaye is channeling some serious shit right now, even if no one knows what it is, recently cancelling the European leg of RiRi′s ANTI Tour, saying, “Creatively, some magic is happening right now, and I don’t want to lose it.” Some wild shit going on for sure, but one thing rest assured, “Music is being made.”
This article takes you on a trip down the musical life of the Weeknd, from House of Balloons to Beauty Behind the Madness, to come to the conclusion that he brings us a ‘velvety version of pop–’ aka politely saying he makes f*ck music so good.
